Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has improved its ranking in environmental management and environmental impact performance, taking sixth place in the World Wildlife Fund’s rating of environmental information transparency among mining and metals companies.

MMK received a score of 1.616 – nearly double the average result – in the overall rating, which included 39 companies this year. The independent assessment, carried out by environmental experts and a professional rating agency, testifies to the Company’s considerable efforts to reduce its negative impact on the environment and restore nature in the regions where it operates.

The rating looks at the largest companies operating in Russia in the mining industry (coal, precious metals, diamonds, mineral fertilisers) and the metals industry (non-ferrous and ferrous metals). The assessment covers three areas: environmental management, environmental impact and information disclosure.

MMK has participated in the WWF rating since its launch in 2016. The project partners are ACRA Risk Management and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Over the years, the ranking has helped to identify annual trends in the industry in terms of environmental transparency and responsibility, has established benchmarks for key indicators, and has served as an effective platform for dialogue between society and business.
