MMK Implements AI-based system for tracking pipes output
Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (PJSC MMK) has introduced an AI-powered "smart" system for counting galvanized pipes produced at the plant. The project aims to streamline workflow processes and enhance customer service quality.
The digital solution, deployed at Sheet rolling shop No. 8, is the essence of artificial intelligence technology — specifically, computer vision integrated into a custom-developed web application. Shop workers use industrial tablets to photograph finished products. The system, capable of recognizing pipes of various diameters, counts them with an accuracy rate of 99.6%.
Real-time data is transmitted to the enterprise’s production databases to generate shipping documents. At the warehouse, staff use the application to scan labels on pipe bundles for reverification before dispatching products to customers.
“Previously, shop and warehouse workers manually counted pipes, with bundles containing up to 600 units. This led to discrepancies, such as shipping incomplete or excess quantities to customers. The new system fully automates the process and eliminates counting errors,” explained Ruslan Khalapov, Senior Foreman of Sheet rolling shop No. 8.
The digital system was developed by specialists from various divisions of the MMK-Informservice.
