Russian Steel Association forecasts 2.5% growth in steel exports as demand in Russia falls

The Russian Steel Association expects steel exports to increase by 2.5% in 2025, the association's president Alexey Sentyurin said at the "Scrap of Ferrous and Nonferrous Metals" Forum.

“In 2021 we shipped maximum volumes for export of 31 million tons, they had to be reduced last year to 20 million tons - that's a minus of almost 35%. This year, given the months that have already passed, we hope that exports will maintain the increase in rates, so for the year, we think we will be able to increase exports by 2.5%,” he said.

At the same time, the president of the association noted that the domestic steel market “does not yet show its positive trends, continues to decline”.

At the end of 2025, Russian Steel forecasts that demand for metal in the domestic market will decrease by another 6%, taking into account the trends of the first four months of this year.

Earlier at the same forum, Deputy Director of the Metallurgy Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Andrei Savelyev said that, according to preliminary estimates of the department, steel production in Russia in the first quarter of 2025 decreased by 1% in annual terms.
