Samsung has abandoned Russian metals for displays
South Korean Samsung Display has stopped purchasing Russian gold, tungsten and tantalum, according to the company's reports. Previously, these metals were supplied by Krastsvetmet, Solikamsk Magnesium Plant (part of the mining division of State Corporation Rosatom) and other Russian enterprises. Experts do not rule out that the refusal may lead to an increase in the cost of electronics by 2-5%.
Samsung Display, part of Samsung Semiconductor, makes screens for smartphones, including the Apple iPhone. The company was working with 11 Russian suppliers in 2021, but excluded them from the chain in 2024.
According to Kommersant sources, the decision is related to the risks of secondary sanctions. Some experts admit that Samsung may buy Russian metals through intermediaries, which will increase the final price of devices. Others believe that the company has completely switched to Asian suppliers.
