Russia accounts for 8.8% of the world's copper reserves
Such data is contained in the State Report on the state and utilization of mineral resources of the Russian Federation, published on the website of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia.
Copper belongs to the first group of minerals, the reserves of which, under any scenario of the national economy development, meet its necessary needs until 2035.
Russia has a large raw material base of copper and ranks 7th among the largest producers. The basis of the country's raw material base is formed by objects of essentially copper industrial types: copper-nickel sulphide, copper porphyry, cuprous sandstones and shales, copper-coal.
The main production is concentrated in sulphide, copper porphyry and copper-coal objects. Russia is among the top five leading producers of refined copper, behind China, Chile, DR Congo and Japan, accounting for about 3.7% of global output of the metal (including secondary).
In terms of copper exports, Russia consistently ranks third to fourth, behind Chile, DR Congo and, in some years, Japan. Russian copper deposits under development and those being prepared for development account for 8.8% of the world's reserves.
In 2023, mine production of copper in Russia remained at the previous year's level and amounted to about 5.4 million tons (including 1.7 million tons in cathodes and 3.6 million tons in concentrates). Mining products are partly processed domestically and partly exported.
