Rusal builds a smelter in the Saratov region Russia

At his press conference in February this year Alexander Zhandarov, Chairman of the Government of the Saratov region said that Rusal was in the middle of construction of it’s smelter in the Balakovo region. The new legal has been registered, land for the construction has been allocated and project documentation has been developed. It is expected that the new smelter will produce more than 1 Mt/y of aluminum. The project costs about $ 12 bn.

It is assumed that funds will be used not only for the construction of the smelter and related communications, but also for the construction of 5 and 6 units of Balakovo nuclear power plant. According to the plan the construction will start already in 2011.

The Government of the Saratov region believes that the establishment of such a large-scale production will establish a cluster of non-ferrous industry entreprises in the region.
For reference Rusal announced in October 2007 the signing of an agreement on establishing an energy and metals complex with the Government of the Saratov region.
Prospects for the establishing of new enterprises in Russia for production of primary aluminum and products based on it will be International Conference “Aluminum: Alloys, Rolled Products and Profiles for the Metal Industry and Metal Construction, which "Metal Supply and Sales" magazine will hold on May 26.
